11:30 AM - Design Discussion: "For the Love of Art"
Join us for an engaging design discussion that challenges our ideas of art and explores how art informs a space.​

The Panel will be moderated by Aleesha Callahan of InDesign

Panellists include:

  • Tetsuya Ozaki, with Masanao Hamaguchi of HIDA a renowned Japanese furniture producer from Japan

  • Dean Bowen, contemporary Australian artist working in sculpture, printmaking and painting  

  • Erna W​alsh, K5 CEO and furniture collector on collectible furniture

​The conversation will delve into how art and craft infuse everyday life with character and joy. Don't miss this inspiring session! A selection on HIDA furniture and Dean Bowen art will be on display on the day.​

Be the first to see the unveiling of our newest Boyd 2 Collection X K5, designed by Robin Boyd.

A joint talk by Robin Boyd Foundation Board Directors Jill Garner and Patrick Kennedy on Boyd’s mid-century furniture he designed for his iconic Walsh Street house with the new release of Boyd 2 Collection.

With Masanao Hamaguchi of HIDA and Suzette Jackson of K5 Furniture

Join us as we sit down in conversation with Masanao Hamaguchi of HIDA on the values and design thinking of craft furniture from HIDA Takayama in the Gifu prefecture of Japan.

Tetsuya Ozaki​

HIDA Representative
General M​anager of Commercial Projects & Global Business

Tetsuya Ozaki, a "wood specialist,"  proposes comfortable spaces with a woody feel based on his knowledge of HIDA craft and backed by many years of experience.

HIDA is particularly focused on the use of domestic timber su​ch as Japanese cedar and​ cypress and is involved in many environmentally friendly and sustainable projects.​ Hida Sangyo was founded in 1920 in Hida Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. The company’s​ furniture incorporates the age-old skills and craftsmanship for which Hida-Takayama is​ renowned, while continuously seeking out new methods of design and production.

 

​Erna Walsh

Erna Walsh is the CEO, founder and furniture development lead for K5 Furniture.​ With over thirty years in the furniture industry in Australia, Erna has a deep understanding​ of design quality, integrity, and craft, combined with global connections, particularly in​ northern and eastern European furniture sector.

Dean Bowen
Contemporary Australian Artist

Dean Bowen is renowned for his life affirming artwork depicting vibrant birds and animals as​ well as urban and country landscapes. His vision and diverse range of mediums, whether it​ be painting, sculpture or printmaking, come together to produce art that is joyous, lively​ and optimistic.

Dean has held one hundred solo exhibitions in Australia, France, Japan, Switzerland and the​ United Kingdom and his work is represented in over seventy national and international​ collections. He has also received numerous major sculpture commissions and awards.

CRAFT CONVERSATION Panelists

 

Masanao Hamaguchi
Chief of Global Business, HIDA Sangyo

Born in 1986, joined the company in 2012. After working in the Domestic Sales Department, moved to the Global Business Department.

Focusing on sales in Asia and the Pacific, he is also involved in the development of overseas businesses by proposing custom-made furniture and communicating during product development.

 

Suzette Jackson
Circularity Lead, K5 Furniture

Suzette Jackson is an interior designer, focused on circular design and sustainability with more than 30 years’ experience within the built environment. 

Suzette’s work incorporates sustainability and circular design across product development, product selection and operations for K5 Furniture. Metanoia+ is an ongoing project to develop mycelium based products for interiors. This incorporates a design studio collaboration with Monash  University in 2022 with a series of design prototypes produced by students
